You eventually headed to Spain. New continent, new country, new culture, new team, new game… You were used to Samba, then you had to get familiar with Flamenco! Lol!!
New jersey, new colors, new shoes… lol! Except buying a brand new outfit, how did you prepare yourself for this new adventure?
Lol. I prepared myself mentally. The contract is only until the end of the season, so only two months. My mindset was to come here and really work as hard as I can to help this team win the championship, and to get my name in Europe. And I really wanted to experience this culture, see what Spain is about. It’s going pretty well so far
You stayed in touch with some of your former teammates playing abroad, Drake Reed has been playing in France and Austria for example, which feed-back have they given you about basketball in Europe?
Yes, I’ve keep contact with him. Nothing much different. Just have to play ball, go hard every chance I get.
I know you had been offered 2 professional options back in the days: England and Brazil. You made your choice based on the weather at that time, right? (lol) Have your “priorities” changed now? What are you expecting from this new move?
I based my choice on which country I thought would be better, and the weather did play a part in it. I wouldn’t say it was a priority that I go to a country with good weather. Because if the Team from the UK offered more money, I would’ve went there regardless of the weather. I just want a good situation and good money, so I can play this game to the best of my ability.
Do you think you enjoy more or less your pro and personal life being somewhere else but in the US? What do you miss the most from home?
Of course I miss my family and friends, the food, just the lifestyle that I’m used to. But it is great to be abroad. These experience are priceless
Would you say that you made it through a better/ worse/ equal way than some of your former teammates from high school and college?
I really can’t say if I had it worse, or easier than my old teammates. I just know the things and times that I’ve had to work through. I know that I’ve worked hard for the success that I’ve had and I deserve every bit of it.
What would be the most awkward situation you have been facing so far? How did you handle it eventually?
The most awkward situation is that I’m living in a very small town, with a lot of older people. When I’m walking through the city, they have the tendency to stare as if they’ve never seen a black person. I’m not sure of the real reason for the stares, but it’s annoying. I handle it well, I just keep going about my business.
What is the question you would have liked to be asked? So what would you answer if I had asked you now?
Hmm. What are you going to when you get back home? I’m going to enjoy my time with my family and friends, my birthday is coming up in June so I’m going to take a trip and live it up.
What is the question you would not answer for a public article? Why?
Just something negative or too personal. I would rather not feed into anything like that.
