Elodie Godin : Back to France “ I wish I could win the French Championship one more time”.
Hi Everyone! Out of sight but definitely not Out of my mind. Here I am one hundred fifty percent in shape after few months of a long summer break ! Back to work, ready to hit the ground with a female player who’s also hitting the ground back in France after seven years spent in Italy!! A long list of records to her credit that many may envy. Elodie Gaudin just signed with Montpellier. Let’s have a look back on her career, her Italian experience , an article to be enjoyed al dente.
She made her first steps on the basketball court when she was 10 but everything really started at 15 : after doing a three-year stint at INSEP she signed her first three-year contract with Bourges
“that was a conscious decision because Bourges had won everything that year, the Euroleague, the national championship, but the team had completely changed. A lot of young players had arrived, a great potential and still there was room for me to have an adequate amount of playing time. “
Two years and two defeats against Valencienne but the following year, work paid its dues and Bourges won the French championship. A real culmination and the winds of change started to blow for Elodie. She finally signed with the number one “enemy” : Valencienne…”an average season” she says.
At age 22 came the time to explore other territory. She chose Czech Republic and signed for two years in Prague but played only one year. Not so good of a choice according to her.
“In Prague […] that was a catastrophic choice career-wise, I had a very little playtime. But with hindsight I learned a lot about myself, about self-confidence and self-doubt. I questioned myself , was I still good enough to play at a higher level, should I play at a lower level ? I didn’t know what to do, I was a bit lost “.
But she told us in confidence: “ I am a basketball player and a rather proud person, I thought that I couldn’t go back to France after only one year abroad, I would have seen it as a failure”.
But Failure is Nature’s plan to prepare you for great responsibilities …or success and thanks to Audrey Sauret and the injury of a center player, she got the opportunity to play in Taranto, Italy.
First, a 4-month contract just to get time to prove herself with a team that was involved in the Eurocup. A new challenge for Elodie. Ultimately she signed for two years, won the Italian Championship and became MVP in the finals “A moment I will never forget”. From that day on, she got attached to Italy and landed in Schio….
